田勇泉 Yongquan Tian, M.D., Ph.D.
Professor of ENT, and past President of Xiangya Hospital Former Dean, XYSOM Vice Chancellor, Central South University, Changsha Dr. Tian is the original advocate for XYOAA. For more than a decade he has been supportive of overseas alumni and has visited many of us across the US. He presented both at the inaugural and the 10th anniversary celebration of XYOAA in Houston. The committee recognizes his significant role to our alumni association. |
温耀繁 Yaofan Wen, M.D.
Retired Professor of Medicine Past President of Xiangya Hospital XYOAA Co-founder and Honorary President and Trustee Dr. Wen is the co-founder and past Honorary President of XYOAA, and current Honorary Trustee of XYOAA. The concept of XYOAA was born at the home of Dr. Wen and his beloved late wife Dr. Yuan Tianyen (袁恬莹), who was professor and chair of molecular biology at XYSOM. The committee recognizes his continuous support for the alumni in the Houston area and his significant contributions to the founding and growth of XYOAA. |
陈修 Xiu Chen, M.D.
Retired Professor of Pharmacology XYOAA Honorary Trustee Dr. Chen is a renowned professor and past chair of the Department of Pharmacology at XYSOM, with special interest and attainments in cardiovascular pharmacology. During his late career he worked in various US medical institutions including Yale School of Medicine. The committee recognizes Dr. Chen's extraordinary contribution to cardiovascular pharmacology, his great mentorship to many alumni here in the U.S. and in China, and his years of support to XYOAA. |
施作榕 Zuo-Rong Shi, M.D.(’52)
Retired Professor of Medicine, 2nd Xiangya Hospital Retired Visiting Professor of Medicine, UCSF Former Director of Immunohistochemistry & Senior Scientist Zymed Laboratories, Inc., CA Dr. Shi has been supportive of alumni in the San Francisco Bay area for nearly 3 decades and is the co-founder of the Xiangya Alumni Association on the west coast, which later became the XYOAA SF chapter. He is regarded as one of the most successful overseas alumni for his innovation and contribution to the fields of monoclonal antibodies and immunohistochemistry. |

邓汉湘 Han-Xiang Deng, M.D.(’78), Ph.D
Research Professor Co-Director of Research Department of Neurology & Clinical Neurosciences Northwestern Univ. Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL Dr. Deng is a world famous scientist in the research on neurodegenerative diseases including ALS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Before settling in the US, he was the Director of the Medical Genetics National Core Laboratory at XYSOM. In the past 2 decades, his research contributed to the identification of several disease-causing genes such as TRPV4, UBQLN2 and those of SOD and Alsin, and to the development of relevant animal models for understanding the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia, ALS, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and scapuloperoneal spinal muscular atrophy. He stands out with numerous publications in many prestigious journals, including both Nature and Science. The impact of his research is evidenced by an extremely high citation index and extensive media coverage that includes Time magazine, Faculty of 1000, The New York Times and major news networks. |
钟光明 Guang-Ming Zhong, M.D.(’78), Ph.D.
Professor of Microbiology & Immunology Co-Director, Microbiology Immunology Ph.D. Program Univ. of Texas Health Science Ctr., San Antonio, TX Scientific Co-Director, San Antonia Vaccine Center Dr. Zhong is one of the leading experts in the research on chlamydia infection and prevention, with a long track record of research funding that led to extensive publications in many prestigious journals, as well as several patents on chlamydial diagnosis and vaccine. Currently his research funds include two NIH R01s, one NIH T32 and one from DOD. He has made numerous and crucial contributions to the understanding of chlamydial infection in cardiovascular diseases and infertility, and to the identification of potential target for therapy and vaccine. |
莫红梅 Hongmei Mo, M.D.(’79)
Principal Scientist and Director Biology Gilead Science Inc., Foster City, CA Dr. Mo’s early research focused on HIV protease inhibitors and resistance. After joining Abbott Labs in 1997, she quickly rose to lead and coordinate HCV novel inhibitor and resistance projects. Since joining Gilead in 2006, she has built and led the HCV Clinical Virology team to support the development of six HCV inhibitors in phase I to phase III studies. She devised strategies for all HCV drug development programs, coordinated with other teams and external collaborators, and is a core member in designing, supervising and analyzing clinical research and trials. The committee recognizes Dr. Mo’s research and expertise on HIV and HCV, and her leading role in the development of anti-HIV and anti-HCV drugs from basic research to various stages of clinical trials. She is being awarded for her excellence in research in the non-academic track. |

段大跃 Darrel Dayue Duan, M.D.(’77), Ph.D.
Professor Director of Cardiovascular Phenomics Laboratory Department of Pharmacology Univ. of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno, NV Dr. Duan is a well-established scholar with many publications in prestigious journals including Nature. His research at NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence at UNR has been well-funded for over a decade, with more than forty students studying or having studied under his guidance. He is a leading expert in the research on genomic and proteomic analysis of chloride channels in cardiac disease and serves on numerous national professional committees, peer-reviewed journals and grant review in the US and in China. |
陈丰原 Alex Chen, M.D.(’80), Ph.D.
Professor Director of VA Vascular Surgery Research Department of Surgery Univ. of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA Dr. Chen stands out as a well-recognized speaker and chair in many influential national and international conferences. For over a decade, his research on endothelial function, wound healing and angiogenesis has been funded by NIH, ADA, AHA and VA with extensive publications in many prestigious journals. He has taught and trained numerous students in his research lab and in class. In addition, he serves on numerous national professional committees, peer-reviewed journals and grant review in the US and in China. |
夏阳 Yang Xia, M.D.(’83), Ph.D.
Associate Professor Department of Biochemistry & Molecular biology Director of Outstanding Xiangya Young Scholar Program Univ. of Texas-Health Science Center, Houston, TX Dr. Xia stands out as a well-funded and established research scholar, and as a winner of many national awards including the LBJ award from AHA. Her research has been funded by NIH for more than a decade. Currently she holds two NIH R01 and one NIH RC grants, two grants from AHA and an additional NIH R01 (as Co-PI) that support her work on sickle disease and vascular diseases such as preeclampsia, renal fibrosis and hypertension. In addition, the committee recognizes her outstanding contributions as the founder and director of the Outstanding Xiangya Young Scholar Program at UT Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Science, which has trained many young scientists recognized in China. |

夏锦如 Jinru Shia, M.D.(’78)
Attending & Professor Director of Gastrointestinal Pathology Director of Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship Program Department of Pathology Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY Dr. Shia stands out as both the Director of the GI pathology section and the Director of the GI pathology fellowship program at one of the best cancer institutes in the US. In addition, she is a well-recognized and well-received speaker at many national and international conferences. She has been working at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center since her fellowship in 1998. As a co-investigator, she participated in many NIH-funded clinical research projects and has authored or co-authored over 140 research papers. |
王飒 Sa Wang, M.D.(’84), M.Sc.(’92)
Attending and Associate Professor Director of QI Program and Associate Director of Flow-Cytometry Department of Hemato-pathology Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Univ. of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX Dr. Wang was awarded in every institution she worked for since her residency. She is well-recognized for her professional service as chair and moderator in many ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology) conferences, as a question-writer for a national resident and hemato-pathology fellow in-service exam, and as a member of an expert panel on Algorithm for Acute Leukemia work-up Guideline of CAP/ASH (College of American Pathology /American Society of Hematology). She has been published extensively both in peer-reviewed journals and in book chapters. |

陈一舫 Yifang Chen, M.D.(’78), M.Sc.(’83)
Physician Assistant in Interventional Radiology Department of Radiology Univ. of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, MI Co-founder and President, XYOAA Michigan Chapter The committee recognizes Dr. Chen’s tremendous contribution to the local community. For over 7 years he worked as a volunteer math teacher for Ann Arbor Math Olympiad Co-op and math coach for Forsythe Middle School in Ann Arbor, MI, where he teaches every week during the school year at both locations. In addition, he also serves as the only Asian American Board member in his local homeowner association with more than 170 families. Dr. Chen recently co-founded the XYOAA Michigan chapter. |
陶虹 Hong Tao, M.D.(’81), M.B.A.
XYOAA Treasurer Past President & CEO of Pittsburgh Chinese School Pittsburgh, PA Dr. Tao has been very active in the Pittsburgh Chinese and Xiangya communities for over a decade. She co-founded the XYOAA Pittsburgh chapter in 2002 and currently serves as the Director of Finance of XYOAA. As President & CEO of Pittsburgh Chinese School and Chair of Rebuild A School Campaign (2008-09), she made history in the Pittsburgh Chinese community by, and was praised by the Mayor of Pittsburgh for, organizing a fundraising campaign that collected $125,000 for building the “Pittsburgh Chun-lei Elementary School” (匹兹堡春蕾学校) in 广元市利州区南陵村 after the earthquake in Sichuan. |
张斗 Dou Alvin Zhang, M.D.(’86), Ph.D.
Cardiologist, Kaiser Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group Baltimore, MD Board of Trustee, The Horizon Foundation, Howard County, MD Diversity Council Member, Kaiser Foundation Mid Atlantic Section Committee Member, Baltimore - Xiamen Sister City Committee Chairman, Asian American Health Center, MD Dr. Zhang stands out as a champion in community service for local Asian Americans and low-income families in Howard County, Maryland. As the Medical Director and Chairman of the board of the AAHC, and board member of the Horizon Foundation, he helped to secure thousands of dollars in funds and grants from the state government and NIH to improve the health and wellness of under-privileged people. In addition, he promoted the medical and educational exchange between Baltimore and Xiamen through the Baltimore-Xiamen Sister City Committee. He was awarded the Governor’s Citation in 2011 for his commitment and dedication to improve the health and wellness of the Asian American community in the State of Maryland. |

王亮 Larry Liang Wang, M.D.(’77), Ph.D.
Acting Director of Anatomic Pathology Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Children Hospital Los Angeles Associate Professor of Pathology and Surgery Keck School of Medicine USC, Los Angeles, CA Dr. Wang is the co-founder of XYOAA and served as the first President until 2008. Currently he serves as a Board member and a member of the Education Committee. He frequently lectures in Changsha, Beijing, and Shenzhen, and serves on the editorial boards for many Chinese journals. Most recently Dr. Wang helped to establish the medical student exchange program between XYSOM and USC. As a clinician, he serves as Acting Director of Anatomic Pathology at the Children Hospital Los Angeles, and was recognized as a Top Doctor by Pasadena Magazine in 2010, and as a Southern California Super Doctor by Los Angeles Magazine in 2012. Dr. Wang is being chosen for this award in recognition of his role in the founding of XYOAA, and his continuous dedication its growth. |

廖仲星 Zhongxin Liao, M.D.(’77)
Attending and Professor Clinical Medical Director Department of Radiation Oncology Division of Radiation Oncology MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX Dr. Liao stands out as the Medical Director at one of the best cancer institutes in the US, a Top Doctor chosen by US News and World Report, and the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award winner from the American Association for Women Radiologists (AAWR) in 2011. She is a leading expert in cancer radiation therapy, and a leader in the AAWR. As a collaborator and co-investigator, she participated in numerous research projects in cancer radiation therapy, and is currently a co-investigator in proton therapy funded by NIH. She has authored or co-authored over 140 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as many book chapters, and is a well-recognized speaker in numerous national and international meetings. |
刘振启 Zhenqi Liu, M.D.(’78)
Attending & Professor of Medicine Chief, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism Department of Medicine Univ. of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, VA Dr. Liu stands out as a section chief in a major medical institution, and as a Top Doctor chosen by US News and World Report. In addition, he has won many research awards from the ADA. His research has been funded by the NIH and the ADA for more than a decade. Currently his research on insulin and angiotensin II are supported by one NIH R01 and two ADA grants as PI, and two additional NIH R01 as Co-PI. He has authored or co-authored over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as many book chapters, and is a well-recognized speaker in numerous national and international meetings. He has been supportive of medical research and education in Xiangya and China in various ways for many years. |

He has authored or coauthored nearly 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals. The committee recognizes Dr. Zhu’s important role as the Associate Director, co-educational Director and core lab Director in the Clinical and Translational Science Center at a leading medical institution that is heavily funded by the NIH. In addition, Dr. Zhu has made important contributions to both XYOAA and Xiangya, such as establishing the medical students exchange program between Xiangya and Cornell, and serving on many prestigious Chinese national committees on research. |
